The Semien Mountain Massif is a broad plateau, cut off to the north and west by a 60 kilo Meters escarpment. Great gullies and gorges split the plateau, while old Volcanic plugs break up the skyline. The endemic Walia Ibex, Semien Fox and Gelada Baboon can be found in this spectacular splendor. The park is 120 kilo meters north of Gondar, and has been inscribed by UNESCO as a world Heritage Site. The highest peak in Ethiopia and the fourth highest in Africa, Ras Dashen which rises to 4620 meters, stands adjacent to the park. The Simien Mountains is without doubt the most popular place for serious trekking in Ethiopia.

The itinerary below leads us to the summit of Ras Dashen, the highest point of Ethiopia. According to visitors’ preferences and available time, the first and the last nights of this itinerary can be allocated to stay on the luxurious Simien Lodge. The whole trekking will be accompanied by a local guide, scout(s), mules and their handlers to carry luggage and supplies and a chef to prepare the meals.

  • Day 3:  Sankaber - Geech
The first serious day of trekking starts from the beautifully situated campsite of Sankaber. Today's trek covers a distance of approximately 10 kilo meters and takes around 6 hours straight walking following the spectacular escarpment. Here you may meet your first Gelada Baboons foraging in big groups, at the fields. A stunning viewpoint at the Jinbar Falls is reached after climbing a few rocks. This waterfall plunges several hundred meters down the escarpment in the abyss. At the end of the day you pass through the welcoming village of Gich for the night camping.
  • Day 4: Gich - Chennek
This is probably the most spectacular stage of the whole trekking, offering stunning views all the way. Today you will walk for almost 8 hours to cover 12 kilo meters, including a short detour to Imet Gogo (3925 meters). This summit offers the most exciting views. The majestically lammergeyer might soar the skies in front of you and the endemic thick billed raven will be present. On your way to Chennek you pass some other major peaks (Inataye reaching 4070 meter) and a deep valley. Chennek is abundant with the giant lobelia and the best place to spot the endemic and endangered walia ibex. They usually walk into the camp. O/N camping
  • Day 5: Chennek - Ambiko
Trek for about 9 to 10 hours from Chenek to Ambiko (14 kilo meters) following a track that leads you to the south east of Chenek. Here you will have a good viewpoint on the eastern escarpment near the Ambiko camping spot. While passing Bwahit is an excellent area to find the Ethiopian wolf. Like the other evenings we lit a campfire to keep you warm. O/N camping
  • Day 6: Ambiko –Rash Dashen-Ambiko
Trek for about 9 to 10 hours in total from Ambiko to Ras Dashen and returning back to Ambiko.  All the way up to the top is the roof of Ethiopia, Ras Dashen (4620meters). The view from the top may not be as stunning as other places in the semien but you made it! O/N camping
  • Day 7: Ambiko – Chennek
There are several ways to do it. The easiest way is to walk about 4 hours to the village of Chiro Leba where a 4WD vehicle can pick you and drive you out to Debark (or even Gondar the same day). However, since you came to enjoy the Simien Mountain you will continue to Chennek and stay overnight in a camp.
  • Day 8: Chennek - Sankaber/ Simien Lodge/ Debark
We take a new path to reach our departure camp of Sankaber. It takes around 7 hours to cover the roughly 20 kilometers. At the end of the day you can choose to enjoy whether staying in the camp or in the luxury of the Simien Lodge.  Driving you out to Debark is another alternative.
  • Day 9:  Gonder
This is the end of the hiking program in the Simien Mountains. Our car will pick you from Sankaber and drive you back to Gonder for a flight back to Addis Abeba or to continue your tours with Gize discovering the historic North; Axum, Lalibela and Bahir Dar since the program can be easily combined with the historic north. O/N Gonder in hotel
  • Day 10:  Gonder-Addis Abeba and Departure
Fly back to Addis Ababa; if time permits Addis Abeba city tour and shopping in Merkato. Evening will be traditional dinner with folkloristic dances as a Farwell night party. Evening or next day will be departure. For those who still have time we suggest other tours.
